Christmas Cookie Recipe Exchange - Fun Holiday Event

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Who doesn't like homemade Christmas cookies?

When I was a little girl my favorite holiday treat was no-bake cookies. I remember the sweet aroma throughout the house and the delightful gems lined up across the kitchen counter on waxed paper.

Mom made them perfect. She always made them around Christmas time. She made other kinds of cookies, but the no-bake ones stick in my mind.

Are you pressed for time or energy this holiday season and you just don't have the time to make a big variety of homemade cookies? I have a really fun solution for you!

Host a Christmas cookie recipe exchange party. This is an excellent way to gather a nice assortment of Christmas cookies. The key to this event is "how many show up"...the more guests you invite, the more recipes and cookies you will end up with.

This event can even involve a holiday meal before hand as well to make it more festive. This is really up to you. But, the number one rule is...each guest that attends has to bring so many dozens of only one type of homemade cookie along with their recipe. (the exact amount of cookies are decided upon by the hostess).

Important Tips For Your Cookie Exchange Event

1. It's best to print the recipes on index cards. Each guest will need to bring multiple copies of their recipe. Make sure your guests include their names on top of each recipe copy. It would be a good idea for you to have extra index cards on hand just in case there is not enough to go around to each guest that attends.

2. Have your guests call you to let you know what recipe they will be preparing and bringing to the event. (just to make sure none of them are bringing the same recipe) Of course, you want them all to be unique to provide a good variety.

3. Have some festive throw away containers or trays available for each of your guests to gather their cookies in.

4. If you decide on a meal...to make it easy on yourself, finger foods work really well for this type of event. Make it a buffet style. A good idea for a beverage would be some hot cider.

5. Have fun with this event and set a festive table display!

A cookie exchange party is a really fun way to visit with family and friends and end up with some special holiday treats and recipes all at the same time...not to mention, it's saves YOU time and energy when it comes to baking.

Below is my Mother's recipe for no-bake cookies:

No Bake Cookies

Ingredients

2 c. sugar
1/2 c. milk
1/4 c. cocoa (unsweetened)
1 stick margarine
1/2 c. smooth peanut butter
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. quick oats

Directions

Combine sugar, milk, cocoa in small saucepan. Bring to boil for 1 minute.

Remove from heat, add remaining ingredients. Mix well.

Drop by tsp. onto waxed paper. (May need to refrigerate)

Holiday Gifts For Nursing Home Residents

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The holiday season is again approaching. Every year, as the calendar inches closer to the Big Day, the dilemma of what to give someone in a nursing home resurfaces. Birthdays and Mother's Day/Father's Day bring up the same questions. It's challenging to find the right gift for someone in a nursing home.

Take this list with you when you shop for any occasion. Pick up one or two items for simple gifts, or bundle several together in a decorative container for a custom gift basket that is certain to delight your favorite nursing home resident.

Entertainment:

Subscriptions on meaningful topics. Sports magazines, news magazines, womens' publications, the local newspaper, large print digests

Large print fiction or non-fiction books

Large print crossword or word-find books

CDs of favorite music from the 30s, 40s or 50s

DVDs of favorite television shows or movies

A radio, CD player, CD player or even a new television

Games such as checkers, chess, parcheesi, pokeno, dominoes and card decks

Photo album with dates and names clearly labeled

Clothing and Toiletries:

Sweat suits, cardigan sweaters, robes and pajamas. Look for items that have stretchy fabrics and loose arms so that they are easy to get on and off

Slippers or shoes with backs and rubber soles

Hand or body lotion

Facial tissues with lotion

Brush and comb with long handles for those with limited arm mobility

Hands-free pedestal mirror

Electric razor

Gift certificate for the nursing home gift shop or beauty/barber shop

For The Room:

Framed family photographs

New afghan or lap robe

Large number clock

Small lockbox for securing personal treasures

Earphones for television or radio

Large number amplified phone

New large print calendar with important dates marked

Large print address book with addresses and phone numbers already written in

Greeting cards for all occasions and stamps

For loved ones in a nursing home avoid highly fragranced gifts such as cologne, perfume or after shave. These can be annoying to other residents even if your loved one enjoys them. Residents with dementia may accidentally swallow these, too.

Food items can be difficult because of dietary restrictions. If you are certain your loved one will be able to enjoy them, remember to avoid anything that might be difficult to eat with dentures, such as caramels.

If the person you are shopping for has a roommate who gets few visitors (or none at all) consider "adopting" him or her. A little something from you may be the only recognition this lonely person gets on an important day.

Do your best to deliver your gifts in person. Most nursing home residents appreciate visits much more than gifts of things.

Holiday Spots: Traditional Holiday Celebrations, or Holiday Vacations

Image : http://www.flickr.com

For some, the best holiday spot is at their own home and hearth. Thinking of holidays, like Christmas or Thanksgiving, brings to mind snow angels, scents of pine trees sparkling with glitter and lights, with family gathered to celebrate Yuletide traditions passed from generation to generation. With blended family units, and families tending to be spread far and near, more families, whether it is for large family celebrations, or small, intimate getaways, are spending holidays away from home, at holiday hot spots around the globe.

There are several vital considerations when planning the perfect holiday spot for your celebration. Do you live in an area where snow is an everyday event, leaving you with a yearning for a warm, sultry getaway filled with daytime lounges on sandy beaches, long walks beneath star filled skies, and the sound of the surf singing you to sleep each night, or do you long to spend a white Christmas away from home, bundling up, hitting the slopes, and then warming up with hot cocoa in front of a crackling fire?

The mountains of Colorado never fail to provide traditional white Christmas fans the perfect holiday spot. Rustic mountain cabins in places like Vermont also provide privacy, and all the amenities to enjoy the snow, scenery, and ski slopes. Places like Jamaica, Christmas Island, or a Caribbean get away, can make the cold, snowy weather at home seem an eternity away.
Whatever your decision, early planning is essential. Coordinate your plans with extended, or blended, family members, whether they are joining you at your chosen holiday spot, or plan to split the holidays to accommodate child visitation schedules, or other activities and celebrations. The best vacation dates and hottest holiday spots tend to be booked months in advance, so research by taking virtual tours, and consulting travel agents. Then choose the perfect holiday spot, and make all the arrangements early.

Winter Window Box Ideas - Holiday Decorating

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Winter is a time when many window box enthusiasts leave their window boxes empty and barren. This is unfortunate, especially since there are many ideas you can use to decorate your window boxes in the winter. Winter is a fun and exciting time to try some decorating ideas for the holidays that you just can't pull off in the Spring or Summer. Here are some winter window box ideas for decorating and gardening. You can either plant flowers, plants, and vines that thrive in the winter or you can choose to go with a decorating theme for the Holiday season. Here's three of my favorite ideas:

1. Winter Window Box Vines: My two personal favorite vines for cold winter are Virginia Creeper and Boston Ivy. Both do very well in cold winter weather and both are climbing vines that are ideal for not only decorating your window boxes, but creating coverage that can spread across your entire house. During the Fall season and leading into winter these vines can often turn a reddish orange color making them ideal for the Holiday season. An alternative to climbing vines is hanging vines. Potato vine is a great hanging vine that will create a flow out of the box and a different look than your climbers will and is another favorite that does well year round.

2. Winter Window Box Flowers: Primroses and Pansies are a few choices for perennial flowers for winter window boxes. Beautiful blue and white flowering Forget-Me-Not flowers can make a great holiday display in your window boxes or you can go with a Christmas theme of red pansies and green ivy. Most winter flowers need to be planted in the Spring or Summer or they can be purchased in the winter from a local nursery and then placed in your window box. Some winter ferns also work well to bring a holiday look to your windowboxes.

3. Holiday Decorating Ideas for Window Boxes: Lots of people will opt for a no maintenance solution during the winter and will empty out their flowers, plants, and vines to put in place a decorative display instead. This can involve using wreaths, holly, or evergreen branches placed within your window box to give it a decorative appearance. The use of pine cones, Christmas ball ornaments, ribbons, fake white foam snow balls, and Christmas lights are also other ideas you can use to give your window box a holiday feel.

There is no limit to the imagination you can use for decorating window boxes in the winter. Winter might be one of the best times of the year where you can truly let loose in terms of adding a little bit of personalization and creativity to your window planters. Good luck and have fun!

Christmas Movies - A Family Holiday Tradition

Image : http://www.flickr.com

For some people, Christmas movies are as much a part of the holiday tradition as putting up the tree and opening presents. There is no better way to get into the holiday spirit than to curl up on the couch with a big bowl of popcorn to watch them with your family. Whether you prefer the old classics or the more recent films, you are almost certain to find Christmas movies that everyone in your family can enjoy.

No matter how many years go by, the old classic Christmas movies remain popular. Some of the favorites include Miracle on 34th Street, A Christmas Carol, A Christmas Story, and White Christmas. While many of them have been redone using different actors and slightly varied story lines, they still hold the same charm. They really are a must see if you have never watched them. You can catch them every year during the month of December on several of the cable channels such as American Lifetime Movie Network. You can also purchase them in stores and online for a very reasonable price.

In more recent years, there have been a slew of new Christmas movies released that have become just as popular as the classics, if not more so. Santa Claus the movie, ELF, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and Home Alone are just a few of the more recent favorites. In addition, some of the cable channels, such as The Hallmark Channel and The Disney Channel, release new original movies every year during the holiday season.

Although they are not considered Christmas movies per se, the classic animated holiday cartoons are always a hit with both children and adults. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, A Year Without a Santa Claus, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and A Charlie Brown Christmas are timeless classics. There are also a few animated movies, such as The Polar Express that promise to be favorites for a long time to come.

Christmas movies are a great way to spend time with your family during the holidays. It doesn't matter how old you are, unless you are the Scrooge or the Grinch, you are almost guaranteed to find a favorite.

Holiday Pumpkin Painting

Image : http://www.flickr.com

This fall you can decorate your front porch and become the envy of the neighborhood! With just a little patience and a little practice you can learn how to paint a pumpkin that will stand out among the normal carved jack-o-lanterns! Holiday pumpkin painting can be more than a halloween idea. Since there is no need to carve out the pumpkin, it can be repainted for a Thanksgiving theme and make a nice addition to all of your holiday crafts.

Halloween pumpkins have long been a favorite for young and old alike. I remember spending hour after hour, scooping seeds and pulp from the pumpkin and then carefully carving scary facial features on my planned masterpiece. The problem was, I always seemed to slip up and ruin the whole pumpkin! The result was a big mess and no jack-o-lantern.

When our grandchildren were around 3 years old we made a trip to a local pumpkin patch looking for some new halloween ideas. We found just what we wanted in a display of bright and fancy painted pumpkins! Faces of every imaginable contortion were there and the pumpkins were still intact! No carving! No mess! We looked at the price tags and guess what? No way! I could not believe what they were asking for even the smallest gourds that had been painted in an autumn decor. I jokingly told my wife I had missed my calling. I should have been a pumpkin painter!

Much to my horror she took me at my word and hustled off to some hardware store and brought home some paint and some brushes and a couple of pumpkins and said, "Get started!" I first went to the library and was disappointed to find that there is very little information or instruction on the topic of pumpkin painting.

I went online and found one little ebook that not only was full of patterns and ideas, it had full instructions of exactly what type of paint to use. After reading through the little book I had my first li'l punkin complete in about an hour. Once I had enough to make a nice display on the front porch I proudly retired to my recliner for a little relaxing tv. Within 30 minutes the front doorbell was ringing with strangers who had driven by the house, noticed the painted pumpkins and were asking how much I would charge to paint them a couple of the little darlings.

My holiday pumpkin painting has become a very profitable hobby for me. From mid September through late November the requests are hard to keep up with. Maybe I was wrong. I don't think I missed my calling at all!

Holiday Decorating - Easy Ideas to Create an Eye Catching Red and White Holiday Display

Image : http://www.flickr.com

One of the easiest and most popular holiday decorating themes is that of classic red and white. Creating an eye catching red and white themed holiday display is easy when you implement some of the five simple ideas in this article.

Start with setting a festive table.

Prepare your dining room for a feast with table settings and decorations in berry red and white. Use a white table runner and sprinkle red foil stars confetti down the center of the table. For place settings try using white china adorned with a red pattern. Add bright red napkins to give your table a pop of color. For a festive twist, add bright red foil cracker favors so that each of your guests receive a surprise. Accent your table with bright red stemware to hold your favorite holiday drinks. Place silver candlesticks on the table to give your theme a bit of added sparkle and finish them off with brilliant red holiday taper candles. Create a focal point by hanging large red stars and white snowflakes directly above the table. This is an inexpensive way to brighten the room and amaze your dinner guests with an abundance of Christmas spirit!

Create a welcoming atmosphere with a decorated hallway.

To begin your holiday hallway transformation, clear your hall of all unnecessary clutter. Try adding a small console table with space available for storage baskets underneath. Decorate your staircase banister with a beautiful green holiday garland and accent with bright red ribbon and decorative bows. Add all red Christmas ornaments and artificial red berries for an additional color burst. Hang white Christmas stockings that are decorated in a coordinating red and green or display your holiday Christmas cards by hanging them on a beautiful strip of holiday ribbon.

For a different spin on hallway decorating, try giving your hall an instant festive style with mini trees, pretty decorations and beautifully wrapped gifts ready to hand out to visiting friends. Decorate the hallways in your home with mini evergreen Christmas trees and add simple red bows for a splash of color. Add wood Christmas letters that spell noel or other holiday words. Silver, white and red picture frames with precious family photos can be used as accent pieces on your table. Wrap gifts for your friends in bright red and white wrapping paper and add ribbon bows. Stack the gifts under the table to carry the decorating theme throughout your hallway.

Candle and floral displays set a warm and inviting tone to any holiday gathering.

Place a poinsettia wreath around a simple red hurricane lamp for a quick and simple table centerpiece. Use metallic silver Christmas balls and berry stems to accent. Add live red poinsettia plants throughout the house to carry your theme from room to room. Be sure to have your poinsettias wrapped in silver and white foil or paper so that they match the other Christmas decorations in your home.

Create a cozy living room, fit for a party.

Fill your living room with comfort and joy and pile up the soft throws and cushions so that the family can snuggle down in front of the fire. You will want to decorate your Christmas tree with red, white and silver balls and simple, elegant ornaments. Find a red star to top the tree that coordinates with the star theme that was used in the dining room. Add a decorative red Christmas light strand to a small evergreen garland. Place red poinsettias in white pots on either side of the fireplace mantel.

Any of these red and white Christmas decorating ideas would be elegant additions to your home décor this season!

Here are some holiday weight tips that'll help you keep unnecessary fat at a minimum.

At Parties:

-Never, ever come to the party hungry. Regular meals and snacks throughout the day will help keep your appetite at bay. This method will also allow you to resist overdoing with festive treats.

-Protein! Foods such as fish, chicken, seafood, and lean beef help keep you full longer, so you actually eat less sugary, calorie-laden foods.

-When your finished eating, unnecessary mindless munching by staying far away from candy and cookie plates.

Holiday Meals:

Bag it: Take all those spare treats your hosts provide you with by simply taking them with you to work the next day. This way you won't have any unnecessary temptation left at your home!

-Keep your mind off of food. Instead of going for seconds, volunteer to do the dishes or clear the table.

Anything to keep your mind off food! Believe me, this tip is not that hard at all to accomplish.

-Become discriminating at dinner! Scan the tables for a few foods you must have. Instead of gorging, take small portions of the food you wish to eat. The first few bites are usually the best anyways. Fill the remaining spots on your place with lean protein from meats, turkey, plain veggies and grains.

Everyday tips:

Don't ever deny yourself. If you find yourself lusting after eggnog, sugar cookies, indulge! Just bee sure to keep portions small as possible, so you limit the total damage.

Monitor yourself closely. Record everything you eat and also how much you exercise daily. Studies show that keeping tabs on excess pounds makes it so more easier for you to lose .

Follow these holiday weight tips and properly execute these holiday nutrition and weight control tips and you'll be sure to NOT gain any unnecessary weight this holiday season!

Holiday Gift Exchange Games

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When it comes to a Christmas party you should make sure you make it fun by including games. When it comes to the gift exchange part of the party it can either be the most boring part or the most enjoyed. Honestly, the choice is all up to you. If you are reading this article then chances are you are looking to make your holiday party fun and include some nice games. Within this article we are going to be giving you some holiday gift exchange games.

If you are about to have a Christmas party then you may want to consider doing the left-right present swap. You should know that this gift exchange game is not just going to require some attention but it is also going to require some creativity. All the guests that will be at the holiday party must purchase and wrap up a present that is good for anyone that is going to be at the party. The gifts include small gadgets, candies or candles. Everyone will form in a small circle with the present in their hand while one guest will tell a story. Every time the one telling the story says the word "left" the present should be given to the person that is on the left. Then when the storyteller says the word "right" the present should be handed to the person on the right. This gift exchange will continue until the story is complete and the gift that is in your hands is the one gift you will keep.

Have you ever heard of the secret Santa? The secret Santa is well heard of and many individuals do it but it is fun, especially in the work place. You write down everyone's names on individual cards. Before the party each person draws out a name. The individual's name that is on the card is the one you will be shopping for. This game can be either easy or difficult; it all depends on how well you really know the person. When the party time comes around you will need to appoint someone to hand the gifts out to the right people.

As you see when it comes to Christmas Party gift exchange ideas you can make even the most traditional and boring ideas the best. If you have never tried any of the holiday gift exchange ideas then you should start doing so now. Once you use the holiday gift exchange idea you can count on other individuals using this idea as well. We must tell you it seems to be the holiday gift exchange ideas that make the party the most remembered. If you think about it, we guarantee you will remember the last part you went to that had the holiday gift exchange games and you can remember just how much fun you had that day.
